The city of Ghent has been home to St. Stefanus since 1295. Although our beer is now brewed at the nearby Van Steenberge Brewery, it was originally part of the role of the Augustinian Sint Stefanus Monastery that is located in the heart of the city.
There has always been a strong brewing tradition at abbeys and monasteries. Beer brewing was commonplace in these religious houses at the time. As drinking water was often polluted, monks brewed beer to provide a safe option for the community.
